New major virus - Are you protected? Should you be concerned?

There has been a lot of talk in the media regarding a virus called Conficker, which is set to activate today. So far all is quiet, but this is a good reminder that if you are not current on your software updates you are vulnerable to attacks.

Here are some prevention tips:

Make sure Automatic Updates are enable on Windows computers. To configure Automatic Updates go to the Control Panel and open System. Click on the Automatic Updates tab.

Make sure you have up-to-date antivirus software. All antivirus software is slightly different but in most cases you can open your antivirus program and there will be a button or tab for updates.

Don't download programs from sources you do not trust.
Use caution when opening email attachments, if the source is unknown do not open it.

Be careful with USB keychain drives, Conficker and other viruses use USB drives to propagate. It is a good idea to scan the USB drive with your antivirus software.

Some symptoms of Conficker include:

  •  Slow computer or internet connection
  •  Antivirus or Windows Updates failing or disabled
  •  Security company websites will not load
